Photography Trip to New York

At midnight on a cold February night we assembled in the Teign School car park. After being waved off by parents and friends we started off on our long journey, only to return a few minutes later because we had forgotten to shut the gate. After that the journey passed uneventfully and we arrived at Heathrow in plenty of time. The flight and transfer in New York were straightforward and we arrived at our hotel late afternoon.
The hotel was located on 7th Avenue, right opposite Madison Square Gardens, and only a couple of blocks away from the Empire State Building. After sorting out our luggage, some of which had arrived at the wrong rooms, we ventured out into the city and headed straight for the top of the Empire State Building. It was a clear evening and the views of Manhattan and the surrounding area were superb, with lots of good photo opportunities.

The next day we had an early start as we were booked in for a tour and talk at one of the largest photographic shops in the world. The array of photographic equipment, both analogue and digital and all the associated paraphernalia was quite staggering. We also had an entertaining talk and presentation by a leading New York photographer, who also took a group photo.

After this we walked to another photography gallery where we had a short talk by the curator and were able to see a variety of work by different photographers.

That afternoon we caught the subway to Ground Zero, where we had some time for reflection before walking through the financial district to catch the Staten Island Ferry. The round trip which takes about an hour provides its passengers with wonderful views of the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Island and although it was quite bracing, we were able to stand outside and take some memorable photos.

After disembarking we walked back through the financial district and China town, where we stopped for supper before taking the subway back to our hotel.

The next day we walked up 5th Avenue, calling in at Grand Central Station, before our visit to MOMA. This gallery contains some of the most well known art work in the world and is also an interesting building architecturally. The afternoon we had some free time before meeting up again in the evening and visiting The International Gallery of Photography where we were able to see an interesting exhibition containing work from a number of well known photographers. We rounded off the evening with a trip to Central Park for Ice Skating and a visit to Times Square.

On our final day in New York we walked to the Rockefeller Centre where after seeing some short films we went right up to the very top of the building. The 360 degree views of Manhattan were amazing, and even after our short time in the city we were able to recognise a lot of famous landmarks. We were also fortunate that the visibility was excellent.

The remainder of our time was spent on some last minute shopping and packing before beginning the long, but otherwise uneventful trip home.

Memorable moments, well there were lots of them, and of course they won’t be the same for everyone, but some of mine were: watching the lights change on the Empire State building, looking through the fence at Ground Zero, approaching Manhattan Island from the Staten Island ferry, seeing the Edvard Munch exhibition at MOMA and ‘Migrant Mother’ at the Aperture gallery, the view from the Top of the Rock, listening to music in the subway, handing out the neck warmers at Heathrow and eating popcorn and candyfloss whilst watching the ice skaters at Central Park. However, most of all I will remember the fantastic group of people, both staff and students, who accompanied me and shared the experience.

We left Teign school at midnight on Tuesday 21st February 2006, and after an uneventful coach trip arrived at Heathrow very early on the Wednesday morning. Knowing that we had a long day ahead of us students attempted to catch up on some sleep.
